Why Is It Important to Use a Licensed Electrician in Genesee County?

licensed electrician genesee countyWe’ve said it many times before in our blog, but we’ll say it here again: electrical work is best left to the professionals! By professionals, we mean licensed electricians.

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve come across work done by others that is sloppy, shoddy, not done according to code, or even in a way that could potentially create a hazardous situation. Yes, some of that work was done by an ambitious DIYer trying to save a few dollars, but much of it was done by a person the homeowner or business owner paid to do the work. They could have been a handyman or even a general contractor who didn’t want to sub out the electrical work on the project to a licensed electrician. Whatever the case, many of these potentially dangerous situations could have been avoided if the homeowner or business owner had hired a licensed electrician who knows the proper (safe) way to do things.

Why Hire a Licensed Electrician in Genesee County?

It takes a considerable amount of work to become a licensed electrician in Michigan. A licensed electrician is someone who has passed the state’s electrical examination. In addition, to become an Electrical Journeyman, you must have at least 8,000 hours of experience in electrical work under your belt. To become a Master Electrician, you must have been a Journeyman for at least two years and have at least 12,000 hours of experience.

Electrical work is complex and can be dangerous. There is no substitute for hands-on experience, which is why the state requires so much of it to become licensed.

In our many years of experience working as electricians in Genesee County, we’ve worked with all types of systems and have seen pretty much everything. We have a reputation for being excellent at troubleshooting problems and knowing how to fix them. It’s not just that someone inexperienced in electrical work won’t be able to fix whatever electrical problem you have—they may suggest a solution that isn’t necessary. For example, they may tell you that a complete rewiring of your home is required, which would cost you thousands of dollars, when a simpler and perfectly safe solution is available that would cost you a couple hundred dollars. An experienced (and honest) electrician will be able to offer you those types of solutions.

There are definitely times and situations in which it is appropriate to use a handyman. Many of them do great work and are happy to take on smaller projects around your house or business. They will often charge you less than a licensed electrician, so we understand that it can be tempting to go with a handyman for electrical work. However, we would caution you against using someone who isn’t licensed to complete electrical projects for you. If it’s about the money, look for other ways to save—ones that won’t potentially compromise the safety of your home or business.

Hiring a licensed electrician is money well spent. You can rest well knowing that the job was done right and according to code.
